Culture, Creativity, and an Art House Cinema Spur Revitalization in Columbia, SC

The Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina was founded in 1979 by Carl Davis and Linda O’Connor, students at the nearby University of South Carolina. For these 30+ years, the Nickelodeon has consistently served as the gathering place for lovers of film and critical dialogue in the Columbia area. In August 2012, the Nickelodeon moved to its new home in the former Fox Theatre at 1607 Main Street. With the move, the Nick became a major player in the economic re-development of the downtown district.

As Nickelodeon Executive Director Andy Smith writes, the Nick shifted "from seeing itself as an alternative cultural refuge towards being a leading cultural anchor" for this evolving city.He explains how The Theatre's cultural offerings have been able to play a role in the economic re-development of Columbia, SC.
